YOUTH v GOV

In August 2015, 21 young plaintiffs sued the U.S. government, asserting that affirmative actions of our government in causing climate change violate their fundamental constitutional rights. This lawsuit has been brought before the courts because our government has willfully and knowingly engaged in creating this climate emergency by subsidizing the fossil fuel industry, covering up and altering the science around climate change, continuing to expand the exploitation of fossil fuels, and even denying that climate change exists. With the current administration’s climate change denial platform, this story becomes even more important and impactful.

As Mary Robinson, the former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said, “Climate change is the greatest threat to human rights in the 21st century,” with human beings at the core of the debate. Climate change is already causing the displacement of several tens of millions of people around the world, and food security crises are fuel for more conflicts. The topic becomes even more urgent when one considers that our youth and the youngest generations are most vulnerable to these impacts, for they will bear the worst consequences of climate change.

This is not the typical climate change film. YOUTH v GOV brings a new perspective not yet explored. This is not about the doom and gloom and inevitable catastrophe that we know will follow if we do not address the urgency of climate change. This film is rather about our country, government responsibility, our constitutional rights, and the importance of citizen democracy. It’s about the hope that the youngest generation brings and the power of their voice. The plaintiffs claim their fundamental constitutional rights are at stake. The defense argues there is no constitutional right to a safe climate. The questions posed by both sides provide ethical fodder for audiences and a refresher course on citizen democracy and government responsibility. In the end, YOUTH v GOV will activate youth, millennials, and adults to engage as citizens and to lean heavily on the pillars of democracy that we rely on for the future of our country and the world.

Defendants

BIG OIL

Nearly every oil and gas company in the world asked for permission to oppose the landmark climate lawsuit, citing that the lawsuit poses "a direct threat to [their] businesses," which the courts granted. They now sit side-by-side with the US government, with the youth fighting for their future on the other side.
